Danica spent the next couple days with Candace and Brandy, special time with her sister and niece helping to keep her mind off Ford Dawson, and babysitting duty reinforcing that these new feelings she was having about being a mother were very real. Ford hadn’t been in contact, and she’d wanted so badly to hear his voice that she’d forced herself just to give him space by merely sending him a quick text: I’m here for you as a friend, just know that.

He’d texted back: Appreciate that. And ditto. I mean it.

So they were friends. Again. As if she could possibly look at any other man in this town and think of him romantically when she’d fallen in love with Ford Dawson. And she had, of that there was no doubt.

Now, Thursday morning, she was back at her desk at the realty office with a busy day of showings. As she’d gotten ready for work, she’d found herself toning down her usual routine. Her skin care regimen she’d never veer from, but did she need a foundation primer, liquid foundation, powder to set it, then a setting spray? She’d used a tinted moisturizer, a touch of blush, a little mascara and her favorite lipstick. This would have been her look for visiting a farm or waiting to have the oil changed in her car. Now it was her new work look, and she liked it. Her hair, too, hadn’t been flat ironed and then curled into beachy waves, artfully arranged and sprayed. She’d just added a little gel, blown it dry and put it into a low ponytail. Now that she’d gotten used to having her hair out of her way, she liked that, too.

Expecting a young couple at nine, she glanced at her watch. Twentysomething firefighter Matthew McHaul had made an appointment last week, noting he and his fiancée were just starting the process of looking for a home together. When the door jangled, she glanced over and saw a couple coming in. She heard the tall blond man tell the receptionist they were there to meet with Danica.

She walked over, hand extended. “Hello, welcome to Bear Ridge Realty. I’m Danica Dunbar. It’s a pleasure to meet you both.”

Matthew introduced himself, then his fiancée. “And this is Lauren Anderson. As I mentioned on the phone last week, we’re recently engaged and looking for a house. But we’re not sure what we want.”

Danica fussed over Lauren’s gorgeous round diamond ring as she shook her hand. “Well, let’s sit down and get started on finding out what that is.” Once the couple was seated at Danica’s desk, coffee in front of them, she got out her tablet and electronic pen. “Let’s start with what type of property you’re interested in. Bear Ridge has so many different types, from condo developments right here off Main Street to single family homes.”

“We’re looking for a cozy single family house.” She gave a price range and Danica entered it into their file info.
